On Wednesday the Orlando television station WFTV's 9 News program reported the news that Universal Studios plans to add a Pokemon area to its Orlando Resort theme park's KidZone. There has also been plans added for Mario Kart and Donkey Kong attractions for a recently purchased 400-acre lot across the street from the main park.
In the report it was stated that the 400-acre lot is planned for a new park, and that most of the Nintendo properties will form one of several themes that will make a debut in the new park. (Although in contrast, the Pokemon area would be in the existing Universal Orlando Resort park.)
The report also added that the Pokemon area is planned to be opening in 2020, but the Nintendo area will open later in 2023, as Nintendo areas have already been planned for the Universal Studios parks in Japan and Hollywood. The huge effort is part of the larger planned Nintendo-themed initiative that Universal is adding to its theme parks in an arms race against Walt Disney World. Universal had already planned a Super Nintendo World that will be opening at Universal Studios Japan just in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
