Released on Netflix in June, KPop Demon Hunters is not just the movie of the summer, but the movie of the year so far. The CG-animated musical fantasy has topped the streaming charts for Netflix, while also experiencing unprecedented success on music charts, where the soundtrack had three songs in the Hot 100's top 10 simultaneously.
Co-written by Maggie Kang and Chsi Appehans (who also co-directed the film) alongside Danya Jiminez and Hannah McMechan, KPop Demon Hunters follows HUNTR/X, a sensational K-Pop girl group who double as demon hunters, using their music and voices to sustain the Honmoon, a musical barrier that keeps demons at bay. The film was produced and developed by Sony Pictures Animation, although it was Netflix that acquired the global distribution rights.
With the success of KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix has seemingly found its own "Frozen" and is reportedly looking to now turn it into the next big animated franchise. There are reports that Netflix is looking into two sequel movies as well as a live-action adaptation.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to a special limited edition sing-along version of the film, which will release in theaters across the United States this weekend. Despite being easily accessible with a Netflix subscription, fans are expected to head to theaters in droves as KPop Demon Hunters is projected to earn over $15 million this weekend, which would make it the No. 1 film at the box office.
