The Simpsons Movie released in theatres over a decade ago, specifically in 2007. It made over $500 million worldwide on a $75 million budget. Despite this success, a sequel to the animated movie hasn't seen the light of day.
Matt Groening, the creator of the popular animated comedy series, recently participated in the San Diego Comic-Con panel for
The Simpsons (via
CinemaBlend) in which he discussed why
The Simpsons Movie 2 hasn't happened yet.
He explained that there hasn't been a sequel simply because of the amount of manpower and effort it took to make the first instalment.
"This is a true answer. The first Simpsons Movie almost killed us. We didn’t have a B-team waiting to do The Simpsons Movie, so the same people who wrote, animated, voiced and did the music for The Simpsons TV show also did the movie. That was in 2007. We’re almost recovered, almost."
Before 20th Century Fox were bought out by Disney, they announced a plethora of theatrical adaptations of their many animated properties, one of those being another
Simpsons movie. However, after the aformentioned acquisition, it seems that version of the project has disintegrated.
However, Groening followed up his statment by admitting that he does think another Simpsons movie will eventually see the light of day as Disney will probably want some bang for their buck.
"No doubt there will be another Simpsons movie one of these days. I think Disney wants something for its money."
