The Legend of Vox Machina returned for its fourth season this week, and the beloved animated fantasy series has once again earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Whether it's epic battles, heartfelt character moments, or Grog's unique brand of chaos, critics are once again praising Vox Machina's latest adventure as another critical hit.
With ten reviews counted so far, The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 currently boasts a perfect 100% score on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer. This is the fourth season in a row that the series has earned a perfect mark, putting Vox Machina among an elite group of television series to maintain flawless Rotten Tomatoes ratings.
The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 seems to continue the show's knack for introducing intriguing new characters, while keeping the audience engaged with a unique blend of humor and plot. Speaking of plot, Season 4's described as one of the most emotional and darkest in tone yet.
"In Season Four, we find ourselves a year after the Chroma Conclave. Vox Machina has separated, searching for love, family, and purpose," the synopsis reads. "But as always, the call of adventure is a breath away. When a long-slumbering evil awakens to threaten the realm, they must reunite to take on an epic foe."
The Legend of Vox Machina started as a Kickstarter campaign before Amazon Prime Video picked it up and gave it the budget it deserved. It's come a long way from donation goals and stretch targets, and it shows.
A big part of why it works is that the source material actually holds up. Critical Role's original campaign was hundreds of hours of messy, emotional, laugh-out-loud tabletop storytelling, and the animated series has managed to bottle that without losing what made it special in the first place.
Vox Machina has never been a show to play it safe, nor has it ever treated its characters with kids gloves. While there's very much a comedic aspect of the show, it's always had a bit of an edge, so Season 4 leaning into a darker tone isn't necessarily a surprise. It's a sign that the writers trust the audience to handle the heavier material that made fans fall in love with these characters to begin with.
Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina is now streaming on Prime Video. The series stars Critical Role founders and cast members Laura Bailey (The Last of Us: Part II), Taliesin Jaffe (World of Warcraft), Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us), Liam O’Brien (Marvel’s Avengers), Matthew Mercer (Baldur’s Gate 3), Marisha Ray (Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft), Sam Riegel (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and Travis Willingham (Dispatch). The Critical Role cast also serves as executive producers alongside Chris Prynoski (Metalocalypse), Shannon Prynoski (Fairfax), and Ben Kalina (Big Mouth) of Titmouse.
