While some people still tip their nose up at tabletop gaming, role-playing games such as Warhammer and Dungeons & Dragons are more popular than ever. In fact, the latter is becoming so well-known (thanks in part to the popularity of Stranger Things) that a live-action series is actually in development.
Set for release in 2022 or 2023, a Chris Pine-led (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Wonder Woman) feature is headed to theaters, and with talents like Pine and Michelle Rodriguez (Fast & Furious) involved, it is safe to say that Dungeons & Dragons will soon be met with an even bigger audience and fanbase.
However, for hardcore fans of the game, this is far from the first adaptation on screen for the tabletop game. In fact, three seasons of an animated Dungeons & Dragons series aired four decades ago from 1983 to 1985. At the time, the synopsis was as simple as "a group of kids is thrown into a fantasy world where they must search for a way home, armed with magic weapons that an evil tyrant wants."
Those who tuned into the series more than likely have an affinity for the role-playing game itself, and those fans will soon revisit some of the popular characters that faded with the show decades in the past. Dungeons & Dragons: The Wild Beyond the Witchlight is set for release in September, and the following statement was made regarding the crossover with the 80s cartoon.
"I will just say there are a lot of nods to the past in this adventure, including nods to the D&D cartoon. You will run into one, maybe two characters who appeared in that original show." - Chis Perkins, Lead Story Designer
Are you guys excited to re-visit these characters, or for younger viewers, are you interested in meeting them for the first time? We've included the first episode of the show on Youtube below so anyone interested can check it out. Regardless of your thoughts, be sure to share them in the usual spot!
The children encounter Merlin the Magician and learn how he saved the town of Helix from a herd of marauding dragons. Presto decides to become Merlin's apprentice, but in his attempt to find a spell which could send his friends and himself home, he unleashes the dragons upon Helix once more.
Dungeons & Dragons: The Wild Beyond the Witchlight will be released on September 21, 2021.
