Sam Witwer has been the voice of Darth Maul since his renowned return in
Star Wars: The Clone Wars back in 2012. He reprised the role in, the animated series' follow-up,
Star Wars Rebels as well as recently in the live-action Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Witwer, who first attachment to the
Star Wars franchise began when he played Darth Vader's apprentice Starkiller in video game
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, recently discussed Maul's resurgence with
Comicbook.com.
The talented voice actor and immense fan of the science-fantasy franchise reminisced on believing that both Maul would never make the leap back into live-action as well as that
Star Wars: The Clone Wars wouldn't be revived. Asked what his reaction to hearing that both would occur, Witwer responded as such:
Shock and disbelief. I have had fans come up to me over the years and they say things like, 'Hey, do you think Maul will ever be in a movie and you'll voice him?' I would just say, 'That's adorable. That's so sweet. No, of course not. That's never going to happen, but so cute that you think that that would ever happen.'
Or they'd say things like, 'Do you think they'll ever make The Clone Wars again?' I'd be like, 'Shh, you're okay. Go to sleep.' I would have this slightly, I hate to say it but, condescending thought of, 'I know how the business works, and the fans don't, but they have enthusiasm. It's wonderful that they have this enthusiasm.'
Maul, who debuted in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, did in-fact make a return to the big-screen in Star Wars' most recent film and, on top of that, it was announced at Comic-Con that Star Wars: The Clone Wars would be returning next year on Disney's upcoming streaming service: Disney Play. Witwer went on to add that such revivals have opened his eyes in regards to fans' credibility:
Now I'm rethinking everything because all these things that the fans have told me were going to happen have happened. I'm like, 'Okay, maybe I don't know how the business works. Maybe the fans do, and I need to go back to school and figure out how this all works,' because this was never supposed to happen. Me as, what, the big bad in the Star Wars movie with Ray Park?
What do you think of Witwer's comments? Did you react similarly to finding out that Clone Wars would return? Are you a fan of his Maul?
Star Wars: The Clone Wars will return next year on Disney Play.
