Amazon Prime's animated series Invincible has exceeded expectations and broken new ground for what an animated show can do, but how many seasons can fans look forward to?
Robert Kirkman, who is well-known for the contributions he has made to the world of comic books with titles such as The Walking Dead, shared his excitement at the prospect of developing additional seasons during a recent interview with Polygon.
In short, Kirkman sees a constantly developing story that will dive into intricate character arcs, moral conundrums, and jaw-dropping action sequences.
"I’m trying not to pin it down to a number, because it is somewhat of a moving target. I think in the seven-to-eight-season range seems like it would be enough. But there could be some things we move through a little faster, some things we expand. If we’re fortunate enough to go for a good long time, I think that would be enough to cover the entire comic. And there are some things along the way that didn’t get into the comic that I’d like to do. I think it’d be cool to have some episodes here and there that are completely original. So that’s part of the plan moving forward."
Invincible's storylines are one of the show's many strengths. Multiple seasons would provide a canvas for such things as Mark Grayson's further development. After all, he has a lot going on with juggling life, love, abilities, and being the son of Omni-Man.
Multiple seasons usually result in a larger cast of recurring characters. It's safe to say there will be a good returning cast, as well as new characters who will either assist Invincible on his quests, or prove to be obstacles.
The ethical terrains that are traversed in Kirkman's work can be deep. Fans can look forward to moral and ethical predicaments in upcoming seasons that will likely test the characters of the show, as well as its viewers.
Will Mark/Invincible take a stand against the increasing militarization and weaponization of the world's superpowers? Will he wrestle with the moral quandaries that come with being a vigilante?
Building a name for yourself in the competitive world of streaming services of today is more important than simply creating compelling stories. It's possible that Invincible's the longevity might be significantly impacted by things like merchandising, fan interaction, spin-offs, and things not completely under their control like the current writer's strike.
Having a creator like Kirkman who is extremely enthusiastic about the series, as well as a storyline that leaves plenty of room for development, Invincible has all the makings of a program that will be remembered for many years to come.
The first episode of Invincible season 2 will be available on Prime Video on November 3rd, with part 2 being available in the beginning of 2024.
The adult animated superhero television series Invincible was produced by Robert Kirkman for Amazon Prime Video and debuted on March 25, 2021. It is based on Kirkman's comic book series of the same name published by Image Comics and written by Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley.
Invincible tells the story of 17 year old Mark Grayson, and his journey to become a superhero with the help of his father, Omni-Man, who is the most powerful superhero on the planet. Mark will have to demonstrate that he is capable of becoming the same kind of hero as his father while also having to choose between his personal life and his duty as a superhero.
Invincible stars Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and J. K. Simmons as the Grayson family, while the rest of the cast serve as recurring characters.
