Per Cartoon Base, the Ren & Stimpy revival is still in active development. The news comes after the project was first announced in 2020 and then received very little in the way of updates.
In fact, the most recent rumor was that the project was canceled, a casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, Billy West (Futurama) has reportedly sent assurances that the show is still happening. West is one of the leading voice actors in America and previously voiced both characters on the show.
Back in 2020, it was announced that a new season of Ren & Stimpy episodes would be produced by Comedy Central, with the show's original creator John Kricfalusi serving once again as executive producer. The revival was originally anticipated to make its debut in 2023. But with each passing day, that seems extremely unlikely.
With a darker and more mature tone, the new series was announced to be a reworking of the original '90s cartoon. According to Kricfalusi, he intends to create a program "even more twisted and subversive" than the first.
Fan responses to the revival have been mixed. While some fans are thrilled to see Ren & Stimpy back, others are alarmed by Kricfalusi's involvement.
It's a situation that somewhat mirrors the Justin Roiland controversy surrounding Rick and Mort as Kricfalusi was previously accused of sexual assault and some fans are voicing outrage that Kricafalusi is getting a pass for his previous behaviour with his new show.
With no release date or trailer in sight, it's unknown how fans and reviewers will react to the new Ren & Stimpy. Yet for animation fans who grew up on '90s Nickelodeon, the rebirth of Ren & Stimpy will definitely be a big deal.
