Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal was a movie experience for a generation upon its release in 1982. However, it wouldn't be until 2019 that fans would be able to return to the world of the Gefling with The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on Netflix.
Utilizing similar puppetry and practical effects that made the original so successful, the new series didn't miss a beat in being faithful to its roots. The show even won an Emmy recently for Outstanding Children's Program!
However, while the show is no doubt a hit, Netflix has decided that it will not be continuing on the service. Joining an ever-growing list of Netflix show's canceled far too early, Executive Producer Lisa Henson stated, "We know fans are eager to learn how this chapter of The Dark Crystal saga concludes and we'll look for ways to tell that story in the future… We are so grateful to Netflix for trusting us to realize this ambitious series; we are deeply proud of our work on Age of Resistance, and the acclaim it has received from fans, critics and our peers, most recently receiving an Emmy for Outstanding Children's Program."
While it is clear that no one was ready for the series to be so abruptly finished, there could still be hope for the future. Perhaps another service will pick up the series, or the fan voices will cause a continuation sooner rather than later. Until then, we would love to hear your thoughts on the news in the comments below.
It follows the story of three Gelflings: Rian, Deet, and Brea, as they journey together on a quest to unite the Gelfling clans to rise against the tyrannical Skeksis and save their planet Thra from a destructive blight known as the Darkening.
The first season of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is available to stream now on Netflix!
