Soon after the very first trailer for
Toy Story 4 was released online, fans of the beloved franchise were hasty to push it aside, stating that
Toy Story 3's ending was so perfect that a sequel isn't warranted. Obviously, the long-running franchise will almost certainly prove fruitful for the studio on the monetary side of things, but that isn't solely the reason why the upcoming sequel was given the go ahead.
Comicbook.com recently paid a visit to Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, California, where they spoke to
Toy Story 4's director: Josh Cooley. Cooley explained why the animation studio wanted to continue the film series, despite the satisfying ending of the third instalment.
"That's the question of all questions. We realized, we love the end of Toy Story 3. It ends Woody and Andy's story perfectly. We realize there is more story to tell to continue Woody's story and once we started going down that path and realizing oh there is more to tell for Woody, we just kept going and we hit upon something that's worth telling."
Toy Story 4's producer, Mark Nielsen, also commented that the film is warranted to tell the story of Bo Peep's return, as she's been missing since the second instalment released all of twenty years ago.
"The idea of Bo Peep also is so intriguing to us. This movie has been kind of codenamed Peep Here Within the Walls, for the whole four years we've been making it. 'Cause we knew she was such an important character in this one and the idea of them coming back together after not seeing each other for nine year, and just what's become of her was something we thought was worth exploring."
Synopsis: Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.
Toy Story 4 will be releasing in theatres on June 21st, 2019.
