Disney's photorealistic remake of
The Lion King released in theatres over a month ago. Since then it has grossed an immense amount at the box office — even going so far as
to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
Even now, The Lion King is steadily climbing the charts. As of this weekend, the remake has made more than $1.56 billion and overtaken
Marvel's The Avengers as the seventh highest-grossing film of all time (which made $1.52 billion in total) — according to
Box Office Mojo's most recent update.
To climb any higher on the list, The Lion King would have to make another $110 million in order to usurp sixth place from Jurassic World — which made a massive $1.67 billion at the box office.
Though this occuring isn't impossible, it's certainly less likely than The Lion King simply remaining in seventh place.
Director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. The all-star cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon.
