The CW's POWERPUFF Series Reportedly Remains In "Redevelopment" After Last Year's Failed Pilot Episode

There was a lot of excitement surrounding the live-action Powerpuff project coming to The CW, but the pilot didn't come together in a way the network liked and plans were put in place to go back to the drawing board. It's been a long time since we've heard anything about that, and with the network's future in doubt due to new ownership, many have wondered if the show has fallen by the wayside.

Well, according to TV Line's Matt Webb Mitovich, "I am assured that The CW’s live-action adaptation of the Powerpuff Girls, after coming in last spring 'too campy' (and which definitely no longer costars Chloe Bennet), is still in some stage of redevelopment."

As noted, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alum Chloe Bennet was set to play Blossom in the series, but so-called "scheduling conflicts" led to her departure from the project. While it had been reported that the hunt for an actor to take over the role would begin last fall, we've heard nothing since Bennet left the show in August. Needless to say, that doesn't bode well for an adaptation that's clearly troubled.

As of right now, Dove Cameron remains attached to play Bubbles, while Yana Perrault is attached as Buttercup. Previously, the cast included Donald Faison as Professor Drake Utonium, Nicholas Podany as Jojo Mondel, and Robyn Lively as Sara Bellum, with Tom Kenny set to narrate. We don't know if they'll all be back, though Faison will have time after Legends of Tomorrow's cancellation.

Based on Powerpuff's leaked script, there were a lot of issues with this take on the iconic Cartoon Network characters. The property does have live-action potential, though, so we'll see what happens.
