Nintendo and Illumination have been working on an animated movie based on the Super Mario Bros. video game series since 2018. Little to no information on the project has been revealed just yet beyond that, Super Mario Bros. creator and Illumination CEO respectively, Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri are both producing and are intimately involved.
Earlier this year, Shuntaro Furukawa reassured anticipating fans that the project is "moving along smoothly" and they're on track for the planned 2022 release — find out more on that here. Of course, the world has frankly been turned upside down since then by the coronavirus pandemic. Most of the world is under lockdown, which essentially means that we're all house ridden.
However, production of the Super Mario Bros. animated movie presses on even still. Illumination recently told Deadline that "the past two months as an extremely productive, innovative and creative time at the company." It's said that artists and executives are still able to work on the project remotely — most likely via teleconferencing software such as Zoom.
Unlike Illumination's other upcoming animated movies, those being Minions: The Rise of Gru and Sing 2, the Super Mario Bros. animated movie hasn't been subject to a delay.
