SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Star Jake Johnson In Talks To Return As Peter B. Parker In Sequel

While details for the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel are still being kept under wraps, we now have confirmation that Jake Johnson will almost certainly be returning to reprise his role as Peter B. Parker. In a recent interview with The Movie Dweeb, Johnson expressed interest in represing the role and revealed he's currently in contact talks.

"I’ve been working on a contract," Johnson revealed. "I believe Peter B. Parker is making a return."

Unfortunately, Johnson couldn't offer any insight as to what the sequel will offer because he doesn't know. In the first film, Johnson's Peter B. Parker was depicted as a tired, jaded and beer-bellied Spider-Man wallowing in self pity.

"I haven't seen a script," Johnson continued. "I realy loved Peter B. Parker. I would love to know what happens with Peter B. Parker. I think the way his journey ended in the first movie was very open ended. So when I got work they were working on a deal, figured it all out, I thought I truly can't wait to see what the writers came up with."

If you recall, Into the Spider-Verse did have a fairly open-ended ending for Peter B. Parker, but it was also a hopeful one. Having learned his lesson, a confident and in shape Parker returned to his universe with determination to try and fix his relationship with Mary Jane.

Based on Johnson's description of what he'd like to see in a sequel, it sounds like he believes Parker and Mary Jane were able to rekindle their relationship and eventually go on to have kids.

"I'm curious to see what his home life is like and I'm curious to see if — what I've noticed with my life and other people when you first have kids you forget about your passions, and your entire passion becomes your kids, and then your kids start getting older and you remember you had passions too. So I'm curious to see if Peter, in having kids, fell back in love with being Spider-Man," Johnson explained. "Let's not forget, even in the Spider-Verse, he may have a gut, but he's still Spider-Man."

The highly anticipated sequel is expected to swing into theaters on October 7, 2022. Joaquim Dos Santos is on board to direct with a script from Dave Callaham. Shameik Moore will almost certainly return as Miles Morales, the breakout star from the film, and it's highly likely that Oscar Isaac's Spider-Man 2099 — who popped up in the post-credits scene — will be playing a larger role.
