SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY Reworks Lola Bunny From "Sexualized" To "Strong"

Realizing the original Space Jam featured a "very sexualized" depiction of Lola Bunny, New Legacy director Malcolm D. Lee sought to depict a version of the character that reflects a strong, capable female.

Entertainment Weekly dropped an entire batch of stills from Space Jam: A New Legacy, giving us our best look yet at the Tune Squad. Among the Looney Tunes teammates revealed were Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety Bird, and Lola Bunny.

While the characters largely resemble their 1996 iteration, albeit, in CGI form, many fans of the original film immediately noticed something different about Lola Bunny. She is noticeably less sexualized than in the original movie. As EW notes:

Upon watching Space Jam for the first time in 2019, Lee was caught off guard by the original's "very sexualized" depiction of Lola Bunny.

"This is 2021. It's important to reflect the authenticity of strong, capable female characters," director Malcolm D. Lee (Girls) explained of the rework.

From her drawing to her mannerisms, Lola was undoubtedly sexualized in the original Space Jam. But it's important to note that she was also a very capable female character in that film as well. She was quick to remind the fervent male characters not to call her "doll" and she displayed some intense basketball skills on the court as well.

Those skills will translate into this new film as well. Lee referred to Lola Bunny in New Legacy as "the team's best non-LeBron player."

We'll get to see Lola and the rest of the Tune Squad in action on the court when Space Jam: A New Legacy hits theaters and HBO Max on July 16.

What do you think of Lola Bunny's reworked look?

So when you're strong and capable you aren't allowed to be sexualized? Isn't a woman's sexuality part of her strength? I thought our sexuality was our our strength? Cancel Culture is shaping up to be one of the most sexually confusing era's of our lifetime.

@WellsaidNed - I hate to get so deep about a cartoon movie, but I always thought Lola Bunny embraced her sexuality on her own terms. Even when Bugs oogles at her, she is like “don’t call me doll”. Probably not great that the male characters treat her as eye candy though but she was strong and confident in the movie

I don't care about the redesign, she just got a full sized shirt & sporty underclothes, it looka perfectly fine. What bothers me is that Lee hadn't seen the OG until just before starting to work on this, which doesn't bode well for his understanding of the property. Like taking Lola's sexy, confident & 100%-in-charge attitude & simplifying it to "very sexualized". I fear he's just gonna make her into female Bugs.

@8thDoctor - I agree.. she was so much more than "very sexualized" in the first film. I'd argue she was the best toon at basketball.

@MattIsForReal - She was the best by a mile and a half, only MJ was better than her.
