Space Jam 2 began shooting in the latter half of June. This was
revealed by, the star of the film himself, LeBron James. At the time, Terence Nance was attached to direct the long-awaited sequel. However, now Nance has left the project on account of supposed creative differences (via
Deadline).
While a film's director departing a project would usually have an affect on the film's production and release date, Warner Bros. have been quick to replace Nance. Malcolm D. Lee will now direct
Space Jam 2. LeBron James and Ryan Coogler are still attached to produce the film and its release date it's release date remains the same.
Lee is known for directing 2017's
Girls Trip and 2018's
Night School. Both of those films starred Tiffany Haddish and were comedies. The latter recurring aspect therefore makes Lee a good fit for the upcoming film which will see the
Looney Tunes re-enter the modern world in order to take part in an intergalactic basketball game.
Space Jam 2 is set to release in theatres on July 16th, 2021.
