Space Jam 2 began shooting back in June 2019. Following Terrence Nance's departure from the sequel on account of creative differences; Malcolm D. Lee (
Night School) is attached as director while Ryan Coogler (
Black Panther) and LeBron James produce.
James will also star in the upcoming sequel to the 1996 classic — which saw
Looney Tunes characters enter the real world in order to enlist Michael Jordan to participate in their intergalactic basketball game.
Back in November, it was reported that Don Cheadle had joined the sequel. Cheadle is best known for playing James "Rhodey" Rhodes A.K.A. War Machine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The actor recently confirmed that he has a mysterious role in
Space Jam 2. However, Cheadle stated that he can't go into detail for whatever reason.
“No, I’m not playing myself,” Cheadle said at today's Television Critics Association (via
ComicBook.com).
“I actually can’t tell you what I’m playing.”
The actor's wording in that last bit is certainly interesting and has led many to believe that he could be playing an alien opponent of the Looney Tunes or even one of the iconic animated characters themselves.
Space Jam 2 is set to release in theatres on July 16th, 2021.
