In just over a week's time,
Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in theatres for the first time in his very own live-action feature film. Ben Schwartz serves as the voice of the titular speedster while Jim Carrey plays the dastardly Dr. Robotnik. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter play Tom Wachowski and Maddie Wachowski respectively while Jeff Fowler directs.
Since it was first announced that Schwartz would be playing the titular character in the upcoming video game movie, rather than a voice-acting veteran like Roger Craig Smith, many have been wondering whether the actor will continue to play Sonic the Hedgehog in the future — perhaps in a sequel, video games, and/or cartoons.
Schwartz himself recently commented on this (via
Gamefragger). The actor stated that there haven't been and conversations about returning to play
Sonic the Hedgehog again but he would be thrilled if he were asked to reprise the role in a sequel.
"There has been, nobody's ever talked to me about that. For me, it's literally, let's do this, let's see how the movie does, and my hope is that we can do another one if people react the way that I hope they're gonna react for this one," Schwartz began.
But no, there hasn't been any conversation about anything else, because there's some, I mean, Roger Craig Smith's amazing. There have been some incredible voice actors that have done that role, but if they ask me to do another movie, man, I would be so thrilled.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog races into theatres on February 14th, 2020.
