Paramount's
Sonic the Hedgehog got off a lightning fast start at the box office, bringing in $57 million at the domestic box office. It overtook last year's
Detective Pikachu ($54.3M) to claim the title for biggest opening for a movie based on a video game in North America. Projections point towards a $68 million domestic haul for the four-day weekend.
Globally,
Sonic the Hedgehog has brought in $100 million. It probably won't speed past
Detective Pikachu's $157.3 million worldwide opening, but it's still an incredible story for Paramount and director Jeff Fowler.
In May of last year, Fowler and the studio ultimately
decided to take the Blue Blur back to the drawing board after facing immense backlash from video game fans after the initial trailer.
Sonic the Hedgehog was made on an $87 million budget after being postponed three months to give the studio enough time to redesign the character. It seems the decision was for the best as fans are loving the adaptation.
As
we reported earlier,
Sonic the Hedgehog has been officially certified fresh on
Rotten Tomatoes with a 63% with critics and an even higher 95% audience score and an A CinemaScore. It's currently the third highest-rated video game movie on Rotten Tomatoes, behind only
The Angry Birds Movie 2 (73%) and
Pokemon Detective Pikachu (69%).
