Based on the video game series of the same name,
Sonic the Hedgehog features Ben Schwartz as the voice of the titular character and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik as well as James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Tom and Maddie Wachowski respectively. The live-action movie, directed by Jeff Fowler, has been in theatres for a month's time now.
After a whole month in theatres,
Sonic the Hedgehog has earned $306,506,328 overall. That's $145,806,328 domestically and $160,700,000 internationally. What's particularly notable about the domestic total is that it's more than the $144 million earned by
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu back in 2019 (via
Gamefragger).
Previously, the live-action
Pokémon movie stood as the highest-grossing video game movie of all time at the domestic box office. Well, now that title belongs to
Sonic the Hedgehog. That's right,
Sonic the Hedgehog is the highest-grossing movie based on a video game property ever — beating out the likes of
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,
The Angry Birds Movie, and
Rampage.
Below you can check out how Sonic the Hedgehog's domestic gross currently compares to the aforementioned competition (via
Tails' Channel). However, keep in mind that
Sonic the Hedgehog's theatrical run isn't even over yet — not to mention the movie hasn't even debuted in Japan or China yet.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
