The history of Sonic the Hedgehog has seen the blue blur enter more worlds than the video game one. Not only has he been apart of many comic book series, but he has also had an equally unbeaten run in the world of animation.
For the majority of the '90s, Sonic had been just as prevalent on TV as he was in video games. Shows like The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic Underground permeated the screens and is responsible for some of the character's most iconic traits and music. In the 2000s, the animated front became more sparse, however, as the only shows that come to mind are Sonic X and Sonic Boom, which released later in the 2010s.
Since the titular hero has always been one of the most iconic game characters in history, it was high time for him to get his own movie. Following the massive success of Detective Pikachu, Paramount Pictures and Sega released Sonic the Hedgehog in February of 2020. From its opening weekend, the film ranked number one and raked in almost half of Detective Pikachu's total domestic earnings.
After the critical success of the first film, a sequel was greenlit almost immediately and, according to Paramount Pictures, will be coming out in April of 2022! Make sure to share your thoughts on the news in the comments below!
