Playmobil: The Movie is a French animated adventure-comedy movie based on the popular toyline of the same name. Lino DiSalvo directs while Anya Taylor-Joy, Jim Gaffigan, Gabriel Bateman, Adam Lambert, Kenan Thompson, Meghan Trainor, and Daniel Radcliffe star. The film follows a girl named Marla who must find her brother amidst a Playmobil world.
The animated movie arrived in France and the United Kingdom in August but only debuted in the United States and Canada on December 6th. Suffice it to say, reviews weren't kind — the film currently has a 17% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
For the most part,
Playmobil: The Movie is regarded as a feature-length advertisement for the toyline without the near the same level of care or storytelling of something like
The LEGO Movie — which was still considered a feature-length advertisement for a toyline but actually managed to be really good.
After bombing upon debut in the United States and Canada,
Playmobil: The Movie slowly tapered at the box office until it only earned $52 on its final day in theatres. Overall,
Playmobil: The Movie only managed to earn $1.1 million at the domestic box office. Elsewhere,
Playmobil: The Movie managed to rake in over $14 million.
However, a total theatrical gross of $15 million (via
Box Office Mojo) is still nowhere near the film's budget of $75 million. Thus,
Playmobil: The Movie is one of the biggest flops of recent memory.
