Toy Story 4, the latest installment in Pixar's flagship franchise, won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. This marks just the second time the
Toy Story franchise has won the best animated feature award, though a big reason for that is simply because
Toy Story and
Toy Story 2 released in theaters before the Animated Feature category was created in 2002.
Toy Story 3 won in 2011.
In any case, it was an impressive win for
Toy Story 4 which faced some stiff competition in what was an incredibly strong category this year.
Klaus, Netflix's first original animated feature took home the BAFTA for best animated feature last week, while Laika’s
Missing Link won the Golden Globe in January. Other nominees included DreamWorks Animation’s
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Netflix’s Cannes Critics’ Week winne
r I Lost My Body.
Frozen 2, Disney's other animated blockbuster from Walt Disney Animation, didn't even get a nomination.
While
Toy Story 4 took home the award for Best Animated Feature, it fell short in the Best Original Song category. Randy Newman's
"I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away," the catchy tune from the Pixar sequel lost to
Rocketman's "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again." However, guests were still treated to a live performance by the 76-year-old singer-songwriter.
Toy Story 4 ended its box office run with $1.07 billion worldwide, $434 million of which was brought in domestically. It was Disney's fifth film to cross the billion dollar mark in 2019 alone. It holds a
97% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes.
