Last week,
Disney-Pixar released its first SparkShort, Purl, online. It was an adorable little short about "belonging," and it gave us a look at the unique stories the creative voices at Pixar Animation Studios have to tell. Now we get to experience another one of those stories with the release of
Smash and Grab.
Written and directed by Brian Larsen and produced by David Lally,
Smash and Grab is a sci-fi action-adventure about two robot friends who are trying to escape their job. Larson explained that the SparkShort stems from the idea of
"somebody who has a restrained life, but wants a free life."
"There's an interesting idea that a robot who is designed for one job does not want to do that job anymore," Larson continued of the short, which sounds awfully similar to the premise of
Wall-E.
"It wants a better life."
Check out the latest SparkShort,
Smash and Grab, below.
Smash and Grab, directed by Brian Larsen and produced by David Lally, is about two antiquated robots who risk everything for freedom and for each other after years of toiling away inside the engine room of a towering locomotive.
Accompanying the SparkShort, Pixar has released two behind-the-scenes videos for
Smash and Grab, offering more insight into its development and creation.
Smash and Grab is the second of three SparkShorts that first debuted in theaters last month.
Purl also accompanied it along with
Kitbull, the latter of which has yet to release on YouTube. Three additional SparkShorts have also been announced and will release on Disney+:
Float, Loop, and
Wind.
