Renowned astrophysicist and Cosmos presenter Neil DeGrasse Tyson loves to point out the scientific inaccuracies in films, and now he has taken aim at Walt Disney Animation's Frozen 2.
Taking to Twitter, Tyson pointed out to Disney that the water crystal in theaser poster for Frozen 2 is inaccurate, explaining that water crystals have "hexagonal 'six-fold' symmetry." Interestingly, the poster for the original Frozen film correctly depicted the water crystal.
After receiving some backlash for his comment — which included users pointing out that he's talking about physics in a movie with talking snowmen and frozen trolls — Tyson followed up with another tweet, adding: "I actually don’t care whether you break the laws of physics to tell a story... What matters most is the consistency of creative worlds within a story and across sequels."
For what it's worth, Tyson did praise someone at Disney for a scene in the original Frozen — which featured Ice Harvesters pulling blocks of ice out of water — which correctly had the ice afloat "with about 10% of their volume above water." He added that The Lion King did a lot right, even though that's a movie with talking CGI animals.
Disney hasn't responded to Tyson's comments, as they are probably too consumed with preparing for D23 Expo 2019 next month. Frozen 2 is one of multiple animated films that'll be present at D23, along with two recently announced original films from Pixar - Onward and Soul.
Frozen 2 arrives in theaters this November 22. Onward is slated to hit theaters March 6, 2020, with Soul coming on June 19, 2020.
