Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is a sequel to 2014's
Maleficent. Though the upcoming film will be introducing new faces in Michelle Pfiefer, Chiwetel Ejoifor, and Ed Skrein; Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning will be reprising the roles of Maleficent and Princess Aurora respectively.
As five years have passed since the first
Maleficent film, the actors are in quite the unusual situation as quite a lot of time has passed since they last inhabited their roles. In a brand new featurette that
Walt Disney Studios has released ahead of
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil's theatrical debut, Jolie and Fanning talk about returning to their roles after such a long time.
Jolie mentions that Fanning was but a teenager when they filmed the first film but now she's in her twenties, also that her own children have grown up since the first film. The starring actress goes on to talk about what's new this time around and why the sequel was made — that being that there's a story to tell now that the characters have literally evolved and aged off-screen.
Watch the featurette below:
The years have been kind to Maleficent and Aurora. Their relationship, born of heartbreak, revenge and ultimately love, has flourished. Yet the hatred between man and the fairies still exists. Aurora’s impending marriage to Prince Phillip is cause for celebration in the kingdom of Ulstead and the neighboring Moors, as the wedding serves to unite the two worlds. When an unexpected encounter introduces a powerful new alliance, Maleficent and Aurora are pulled apart to opposing sides in a Great War, testing their loyalties and causing them to question whether they can truly be family.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is set to arrive in theatres on October 18th, 2019.
