Popular toy brand LEGO is reportedly exploring new options for its films now that its contract with Warner Bros. has expired. According to the Hollywood Reporter, LEGO is in talks with Universal for a new exclusive partnership that would see the studio produce the next batch of movies based on the popular toys.
Warner Bros. and LEGO found success early on with
The LEGO Movie in 2014. It was both a critical and commercial success with a
96% on Rotten Tomatoes and $468 million worldwide. 2017's spinoff,
The LEGO Batman Movie, found similar success with an
89% on Rotten Tomatoes and $312 million worldwide.
However, things turned south after that.
The Ninjago Movie was a disappointment with lackluster reviews and just $123 million worldwide. While The LEGO Movie 2 received more favorable reviews, it only brought in $191 million worldwide. This cause LEGO to start rethinking its partnership with Warner Bros.
LEGO has reportedly been exploring new options since early fall with Dan Lin and his Rideback banner, who produced previous Lego feature films, still in talks to remain the producers in any new deal.
