As part of an HBO Max sizzle reel highlighting upcoming movies coming to the streaming service, fans were treated to the very first footage of Space Jam: A New Legacy. The clip is short but it's the most we've seen of this highly anticipated reboot, which is set to release this summer.
In the clip, we see NBA superstar LeBron James and Looney Tunes frontman Bugs Bunny looking shocked as something launches towards the air and explodes in fantastic color. Visually, it's quite a drastic change from the original 1996 film which saw then NBA star Michael Jordan leading the Tune Squad to a victory over the Monstars.
Things will be different in this reboot, however. Rather than being sucked into the Looney Tunes' world and having to save them from becoming an alien amusement park attraction, LeBron James and his son will find themselves trapped within a digital world run by a rogue AI known as AI-G. In order to escape, James must team up with the Looney Tunes and achieve victory in a game of basketball against AI-G's digital gamified super-versions of the NBA and WNBA's biggest stars.
When LeBron and his young son Dom are trapped in a digital space by a rogue A.I., LeBron must get them home safe by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the A.I.'s digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of basketball stars as you've never seen them before. It's Tunes versus Goons in the highest-stakes challenge of his life, that will redefine LeBron's bond with his son and shine a light on the power of being yourself. The ready-for-action Tunes destroy convention, supercharge their unique talents and surprise even "King" James by playing the game their own way.
Space Jam: A New Legacy is set to take the court on July 21, 2021. As the initial HBO Max trailer alludes, it will be released simultaneously on the streaming service and in theaters due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
