The first trailer for
Sonic the Hedgehog dropped just a couple of days ago, while
Detective Pikachu will be making its way into theatres in one week. The former was unfortunately met with an immense amount of criticism and comparison with the latter.
On YouTube the
Sonic the Hedgehog trailer currently holds a whopping 500,000 dislikes. The negative buzz surrounding the film was so extreme that the director even recently commented about it, vowing to repair the most prevalent critique: Sonic's uncanny redesign.
With
Detective Pikachu having quite a lot in common with the
Sonic the Hedgehog movie but being met with a positive reaction; the former's cinematographer recently explained why his movie looks better than the latter.
Two-time Academy Award-nominated Cinematographer, John Mathieson, recently discussed the difference between the films with
Newsweek.
“Funny enough, I was offered [Sonic the Hedgehog] and after watching the trailer I thought I’m so glad we don’t look like that."
Mathieson explained that he believes the reason that Detective Pikachu looks better than Sonic is because one was shot on film while the other was filmed digitally. According to the cinematographer, digital cameras don't do a particularly good job at capturing colours (like reds and blues), while traditional film cameras do.
If all we’re talking about is how these two films look, our film is better than Sonic the Hedgehogand I’m sorry, I don’t care who I upset by saying that, but I think it looks better. There’s no reason why you can’t shoot a film like [Detective Pikachu] or Sonic the Hedgehog on film. If you had, [Sonic the Hedgehog] would look more realistic. I look at Sonic the Hedgehog and I just go ‘yeah whatever.’
