Disney's Aladdin has come a long way since the initial teaser trailer which left much to be desired. To the studio's credit, they've turned the negative perception around with subsequent trailers and TV spots, and now Aladdin is one of this summer's most anticipated movies.
According to early tracking surveys, Aladdin — a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1992 animated classic — is on course for an $80 million-plus debut over the extended Memorial Day weekend. Some analysts believe the film could approach $100 million once Disney makes its final marketing push.
An $80 to $100 million opening would put it towards the top of Disney's live-action remakes.
Maleficent opened to $69.4 million in 2014, while the more recent
Dumbo adpatation grossed a disappointing $45.9 million in its opening. But DIsney has found success with some of its live-action remakes, including
Beauty and the Beast, which tops the list with a whopping $174.7 million opening. Jon Favreau's
The Jungle Book also topped the century mark with an opening of $103.3 million.
Aladdin is one of multiple live-action re-imaginings Disney is pumping out this year. We had
Dumbo in March, with Jon Favreau's
The Lion King coming on July 19.
Maleficient: Mistress of the Evil, a sequel to 2014's film with Angelina Jolie portraying the iconic "villain," is set to release on October 18. Meanwhile, a live-action version of
Lady and the Tramp will hit Disney+, Disney's direct to consumer streaming service, later this year.
