Following the success of 2019's Aladdin, Disney has reportedly developing a sequel to the live-action adaptation. According to Variety, writers John Gatins (Flight, Real Steel) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton, The Kitchen) are on board to pen the plot of the sequel, which will be a completely original idea and not based on the two straight-to-video animated sequels from the 90s. Studio and producers were reportedly looking at other stories from One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of Middle Eastern folk tales.
Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are returning to produce through their Rideback banner with Ryan Halprin on board as executive producer. It's unknown if Guy Ritchie, who directed the first film, will be back. Producers are hoping for the return of original stars Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Jasmine) and Will Smith (Genie), but nothing official will come until the script is ready.
2019's Aladdin grossed over $1 billion worldwide, becoming just the fourth live-action adaptation to cross the threshold — joining The Lion King (2019), Beauty and the Beast (2017), and Alice in Wonderland (2010). With that kind of success, it's no surprise Disney is moving forward with a sequel.
While animated sequels from the 90s used to be straight-to-video, Disney will not be doing the 2020 equivalent — which would be to send the Aladdin sequel straight to Disney+. The film will have a theatrical release first before eventually making it to home video and then the streaming service. You can catch 2019's Aladdin on Disney+ now.
