Disney has been digging through the vault to choose which animated classics will receive live-action remakes and revivals over the past decade. So far, this has resulted in many big-screen adaptations and to take it one step further - spin-offs that enlarge the specific franchise.
Some examples include Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lady and the Tramp, Mulan, Maleficient/ Maleficent 2, Dumbo, The Jungle Book, Cruella, and The Lion King. The latter found such success with Jon Favreau's direction and photorealistic animation technology that the studio is moving ahead with a prequel film.
The prequel will focus on a younger Mufasa and tell his origin story. Of course, this involves Simba's uncle Taka - better known as Scar - and both of these lions have now been cast as production moves forward on the project.
Mufasa will be voiced by The Underground Railroad star Aaron Pierre. Meanwhile, his villainous brother is being brought to life by Kelvin Harrison Jr. (The Trial of Chicago 7, Waves).
What do you guys think of this casting? Do you approve of a prequel, or did you abhor Favreau's revival? Regardless, be sure to sound off in the usual spot!
The Lion King Prequel currently has no release date and isn't expected to release before 2023.
