Pixar's SOUL Brings In Another $16M On Second Weekend; International Total Now $32.5M

Pixar's Soul saw an increase at the theatrical box office in its second weekend, boosting its overseas cume to $32.5 million. The film was released on Disney+ and in select international markets on Dec. 25.

Pixar's Soul brought in $16 million in the second weekend of its limited theatrical release -- an increase of 114% from its opening haul of $7.6 million. It now sits at a two-week total of $32.5 million, which isn't bad considering it's only playing in select overseas markets.

The Disney film, which had been oft-delayed due to the global pandemic, debuted on Christmas day simultaneously on Disney+ and in select international markets, including China. In the U.S. and other areas where theaters have not opened back up, you can catch it on Disney's streaming service at no extra cost.

Soul is Disney's second major film to release on the streaming service, following Mulan in September. The live-action remake also had a traditional release in countries without Disney+ where theaters had re-opened, but grossed only $70 million (not counting Disney+ earnings where it cost an additional $30 on top of monthly subscriptions).

Soul has received glowing reviews and currently sits at a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critical consensus reads: "A film as beautiful to contemplate as it is to behold, Soul proves Pixar's power to deliver outstanding all-ages entertainment remains undimmed."

The release of Soul on Disney+ represents the company's latest effort in its business strategy to shift focus to streaming amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney+ saw its global installations increase by 2.3 million upon the movie's release, so anything extra earned at the box office appears to be icing on the cake.

Have you watched Soul yet? If so, what did you think of it?
