Disney's live-action remake of
Mulan is set to arrive in theatres in just over a month's time. The upcoming movie is a retelling of the iconic tale from 1998 which sees a fearless, young woman take her ailing father's place amid the Imperial Army in order to take on Northern Invaders.
Liu Yifei stars as the titular character, Donnie Yen plays Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee plays Böri Khan, Yoson An plays Cheng Honghui, Gong Li plays Xianniang and Jet Li plays The Emperor. Niki Caro directs.
Earlier this week, Exhibitor Relations Co. (
@ERCboxoffice) reported that
Mulan has been assigned a PG-13 rating. This above-average rating is on account of the movie featuring
"sequences of violence," which is certainly understandable and expected given that the movie is essentially about a war.
Interestingly, this is the first of Disney's live-action remakes to warrant such a rating and it's the first of Disney's live-action movie in general to earn a PG-13 rating since
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales — which debuted in theatres back in 2017.
When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.
Mulan will arrive in theatres on March 27th, 2020.
