LEGO released today its collectible Villain Icons, a brand new collectible set that celebrates Disney's classic villains. Available for $129.99, the 1,540-piece set represents various films from the different decades of Disney animation from 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to 1992's Aladdin.
The LEGO Villain Icons set is brimming with nostalgic detail. Included in the set are four mini-figures: Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, and Jafar (in Genie form) from Aladdin. Alongside these mini-figures are buildable storage containers including two VHS cases for Maleficent and Jafar, a buildable book for Gaston, and the iconic poisonous red apple for the Evil Queen.
Disney fans who grew up in the '90s will especially appreciate the replica VHS tape of The Little Mermaid which actually flips open and contains a film strip featuring scenes from the classic movie. There's also Captain Hook's pocket watch from Peter Pan and a Queen of Hearts playing card from Alice in Wonderland.
The LEGO Villain Icons set is technically available for purchase today, but is currently on backorder on the LEGO website. If you do purchase it there, you can expect to wait at least 60 days before it arrives. However, it's possible to find the set at brick-and-mortar LEGo stores as well as participating retailers like Target.
As with most other types of collectible Disney LEGO sets, this will likely sell out quickly and result in third-party sellers charging twice or three times as much on other websites.
The release of this set comes as Disney celebrates its 100th anniversary. As part of this anniversary, Disney has teamed up with LEGO for all sorts of celebratory builds. Part of this anniversary, of course, celebrates Disney's rich history of animation, which includes many of the movies featured in this Villain Icons set.
Disney’s 100th anniversary begins with a special look that honors the fans and storytellers who made this dream come true.
While Disney's animation has certainly evolved over the decades, nothing quite resonates as much as the original animated classics. Looking ahead, Disney will continue to celebrate its animation history with the release of Wish, a musical film that combines computer animation with Disney's classic watercolor animation. The movie is due out in theaters on November 22, 2023.
The all-new musical-comedy welcomes audiences to Rosas, a fantastical land located off the Iberian Peninsula. “Our heroine, Asha, lives in Rosas, known as the kingdom of wishes,” said director Chris Buck, who helms the film with Fawn Veerasunthorn. “People come from everywhere to give their wishes to a magical king who promises to grant their deepest desires—someday. Only he can decide which wishes will come true and when.”
