A new international trailer for Disney's Wish from the official Disney Japan Twitter account hints at the film's connections to previous Disney Animated classics.
The film revolves around a wishing star, much like the one presented in Pinocchio and the stars used in numerous other movies, including Peter Pan, The Rescuers, Oliver & Company, and The Princess and the Frog. Over the years, the wishing star has developed into one of Disney's most iconic symbols. Since 2006, a wishing star has been used in the company's film and television logo.
As part of the company's 100th-anniversary celebration, it's been heavily teased that there will be dozens of references to previous Disney Animated classic films.
"They're all over the movie," stated directors Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn to Entertainment Weekly, in regard to the 'legacy nods' in the film. "We are compiling a list, and I couldn't tell you how long it is now. Each department puts things in, and there's some that we don't even know are there yet, and we may not know until they tell us."
For instance, Buck and Veerasunthorn disclosed to EW that fans should keep their eyes peeled for a shot of the Evil Queen's poison apple when the movie shifts to King Magnifico's workshop.
Wish looks to be a return to normalcy for Disney after several box office misfires, as it's a tale that takes place in a magic kingdom with an evil wizard serving as the film's antagonist.
Earlier this year, the film had a special presentation at the Destination D23 Event at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL where attendees were given the chance to see the first 10 minutes of the film.
Although the clip was not made public, positive word of mouth on social media proclaimed Wish to be a must-see film.
Wish is dedicated to Disney animation legend Burny Mattinson, who worked at the studio from 1953 until he passed away in February of 2023.
In “Wish,” Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star.
Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe—the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico—to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.
Featuring the voices of Academy Award-winning actor Ariana DeBose as Asha, Chris Pine as Magnifico, and Alan Tudyk as Asha’s favorite goat, Valentino, the film is helmed by Oscar-winning director Chris Buck (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (“Raya and the Last Dragon”), produced by Peter Del Vecho (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) and co-produced by Juan Pablo Reyes (“Encanto”).
Jennifer Lee (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) executive produces, and also co-wrote the script alongside Allison Moore (“Night Sky,” “Manhunt”).
With original songs by Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Julia Michaels and Grammy-winning producer/songwriter/musician Benjamin Rice, plus score by composer Dave Metzger.
Wish opens only in theaters on Nov. 22, 2023.
