At D23 Expo 2022, Disney announced Inside Out 2, a sequel to 2015's Pixar film all about emotions. The sequel film, which is due out in Summer 2024, will once again follow the life of Riley, the young girl from the first film. Only this time, she'll be a teenager and we'll be experiencing all of the emotions that come with teenage life.
Amy Poehler will be reprising her role as Joy, but it sounds like she will be joined by some new emotions. Whereas the first film focused on Riley as her family moves San Francisco — and starred Bill Hader as Fear, Lewis Black as Anger, Mindy Kaling as Disgust, and Phyllis Smith as Sadness — Riley as a teenager will mean a new set of personified emotions.
Inside Out 2 will be directed by Kelsey Mann. This will be Mann's first feature film, and she's got some big shoes to fill as she takes over the reins from Pete Doctor. Meg LeFauve will be returning as screenwriter.
The first Inside Out was nominated for Best Original Screenplay and won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. The film also grossed $857.6 million worldwide.
While Doctor never ruled out a sequel to the film, he told Entertainment Weekly back in 2015 that he had no plans for a follow-up film. However, the concept of personifying emotions does lend itself to exploring various stages of adulthood, so witnessing Riley deal with everything that comes with being a teenager should be enlightening.
"Pete did a beautiful job of not only reminding everyone of how difficult it is and emotionally treacherous it is to grow up and to leave childhood behind, but that our constant pursuit of happiness as human beings and as parents sometimes gets in the way of real growth," Poehler told The Guardian back in 2015. "It's okay to be sad, and it's okay to have feelings that aren't maybe the ones that you thought you were supposed to have or are what are expected of you. It's this beautiful attempt at taking this very big intellectual idea and making it this very small, human, connecting experience."
Inside Out 2 is set to release in 2024. It wasn't specified if this will be an exclusive theatrical release or if it will be coming to Disney+.
