Mulan is an upcoming, live-action remake of the 1998 animated classic of the same name. Though originally intended to arrive in theatres on March 27th, the Disney movie was delayed on account of concerns to do with the coronavirus pandemic that's unfortunately still plaguing most of the world. Now it's set to debut on July 24th, 2020.
It's the tale of a fearless, young woman who takes her ailing father's place as a part of the Imperial Army — as every family must put forth at least one soldier. Liu Yifei stars as the titular character. The cast also includes Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li. Niki Caro serves as director.
Though Mulan itself hasn't been released yet, a sequel to the live-action remake is reportedly already in the works at Disney. This news comes courtesy of Full Circle Cinema. It's said that Disney was so confident that Mulan would prove to be a success that they pre-emptively began developing a follow-up and would have announced as much shortly after release.
Chris Bender, Jason Reed, and Jake Weiner are all apparently attached to produce. At the moment, it's unknown whether Niki Caro will return to direct the sequel. Presumably, Yifei and the rest of the cast will reprise their roles.
Similarly, a sequel to Disney's recent live-action remake of Aladdin was announced back in February — more on that here. In that case, it's said that the sequel will feature an original story. It's likely that will be the case for the Mulan sequel — else it would be based on the critically-panned 2005 animated sequel.
When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.
Mulan is set to arrive in theatres on July 24th, 2020.
