SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical, based on the popular cartoon series of the same name, recently announced its closing date.
The production, which spanned 10 months and 327 performances, will be brought to a close at New York's Palace Theater on the 16th of September.
New York Times recently reported that, in comparison to other similar-sized musicals, the SpongeBob live-action hasn't performed nearly as well. The Times specifically note that the musical tends to perform better during school vacation time frames - which is in-line with the animated show's demongraphic being children.
Though its financial turn-in could be better, the Tina Landau-directed musical has been very positively received by both fans of the franchise and critics - earning twelve Tony Awards nominations, back in May, winning one for its production design.
SpongeBob officially opened back in December 4, 2017. The musical featured songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, David Bowie, and even more.
