Disenchantment is one of the best looking cartoon series coming to Netflix later this year. As a series from the creators of The Simpsons, it makes sense for it to have a similar design in terms of art style, but that’s largely where the similarities end.
In a recent interview with USA Today, Matt Groening explained why Disenchantment is different from The Simpsons. According to Groening, it has much to do with having more free time. You see, Fox requires The Simpsons to level out at around 22-minutes per episode, which means, the comedy is sped up.
With the new series, Disenchantment, then, there’s no limit or cuts due to a lack of competition and advertisement runs.
"One of the reasons 'The Simpsons' is what it is the time constraints. The high-velocity comedy got faster and faster and it became a style," according to Groening while holding a conversation with writers at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Sunday. "With this show, we're able to let it breathe a little more. That's gratifying. … It's fun to withhold the joke for a little bit."
With the ability for Groening to avoid all the shackles that held him down at Fox over the years, we believe Disenchantment could end up being much better than The Simpsons, at least, we hope.
It’s a whole new story, a new world, and with entirely new characters that seem quite fun from the trailer we’ve seen. If everything goes according to plan, Disenchantment might become one of the best original shows to air on Netflix in a long while.
No doubt the service needs a hit right now. As of late, a lot of Netflix's original shows have failed to impress, something that just cannot continue.
