In late 2019, it seemed like The Boondocks fans would finally get more content after the series ended in 2014. The big deal was HBO Max and Sony Pictures Animation announcing their intentions to release a reboot of the series complete with 24 new episodes centered around the dysfunctional Freeman household consisting of granddad, Robert Freeman, and his two grandchildren, Huey and Reily.
The plot of the reboot would've revised the entire plot around the show itself, with it centering around the Freeman household just moving into a suburb in Maryland, only to see Uncle Ruckus and his group of neo-fascists take control of the suburb and making daily life a constant struggle for the three Freeman members.
Based on Aaron McGruder's comic strip of the same name, The Boondocks reboot was meant to act as McGruder's return as the showrunner and executive producer alongside Norm Aladjem, Seung Kim, and Meghann Collins Robertson. The news comes during a podcast featuring Tom DuBois voice, Cedric Yarbrough, dropping the bombshell, confirming once and for all that “the show is not coming back.”
“I hate to say this, [but] right now the show is not coming back. We've been wanting to do the show and Sony decided they're going to pull the plug. Hopefully one day we'll be able to revisit it, and if we don’t, that’s what that is. I wish the show was coming back."
On the brighter side, though, you can still watch the original version over on HBO Max, so at least there's that.
