Cartoon Networks popular cartoon series Steven Universe has not took its wide-raning audience of both young and old viewers for granted. The show is a paragon when it comes to spreading positive messages of acceptance, pride and self-confidence.
In-line with those themes, earlier this year, the Dove Self-Esteem Project teamed up with Steven Universe. The recently passed San Diego Comic-Con event housed a panel which focused solely on this partnership. The creator of Steven Universe, who recently went public with her own non-binary status, Rebecca Sugar was present and, with others in attendance, discussed the topic in great depth.
Sugar and co. showed off a few shorts during the panel - each of which focused on a respective element of self-esteem. The team-ups most recent PSA video, which you can check out directly below, was on the topic of: "Competing and Comparing Looks."
It's pretty clear why these messages are important - and need to be spread by such positive videos. Research shows that more than half (54%) of girls aged 10-17 don’t have high self-esteem and 8 in 10 girls with low body confidence will opt out of important activities, such as raising their hands to voice their opinion.
Hopefully partnerships and outspoken entertainment, of the sort, will truly make a positive difference to those afformentioned statistics. The second video, showed off during the panel, similarly focuses on body confidence - this time musically. It features the Crystal Gems singing a song titled "We Deserve To Shine."
