SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS Made A Brief Appearance During The Super Bowl's Halftime Show
Super Bowl LIII's halftime show featured a brief cameo-appearance by Spongebob Squarepants - in tribute to the cartoon's creator who recently passed away.
Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of Spongebob Squarepants, passed away in November of last year on-account of ALS. Following this unfortunate news, a petition quickly went viral suggesting that the upcoming Super Bowl event should pay tribute to Hillenburg - specifically by featuring Spongebob's iconic "Sweet Victory" song during the halftime show.
Now the halftime show has taken place and, while we didn't get exactly what the petition (and many anticipating fans) had hoped for, Spongebob did indeed make a surprise appearance. The Change.org petition's 1,200,000 signatures clearly caught the eye of somebody important.
Instead of featuring "Sweet Victory," a clip from the series was used to introduce an upcoming act: Travis Scott, who performed "Sicko Mode." You can check out the brief cameo below.
Yes, an appearance by the porous character was nice, but many were left disappointed by how brief the cameo was and that petition's desired song wasn't performed - look no further than the replies to ESPN's below tweet - especially given that it was meant to be a tribute to Hillenburg.
