In the two decades since Pokemon started airing, the franchise has spread to become nearly unstoppable, extending its craze to the likes of trading cards, video games, and most recently mobile augmented reality with Pokemon Go.
The game that brings together families and people of all ages out into the open all year round, it continues to surprise. It has proven that it isn't just for Pokemon fans, either, as older fans have started coming into the light, and even people who were unaware of Pokemon before Pokemon Go was released. One person in particular, seventy year old Chen San-yuan, learned of the mobile game from his grandson in 2016, and since then the game has changed his life.
Dedicated to the game, Chen has created an invention consisting of a bicycle and eleven cell phones, as well as multiple battery packs so that he is able to play the game. He spends up to twenty hours a day trying to catch 'em all, and spends more than $1300 monthly doing so. Locals, who have dubbed him "Uncle Pokemon," report having seen him playing all day and night, as late as four a.m.
Uncle Pokemon spends all of this time trying to catch Pokemon or build his own gyms. Why? Because he says that taking other people's gyms would make him feel bad, since he doesn't want to hurt their feelings. His favorite Pokemon happens to be Snorlax, and he has hopes that his continuing to play will allow him to gain many more friends as well as prepare against Alzheimer's disease.
