By now, many of us should have heard of Final Space, a cartoon series from TBS which is now available on Netflix. It’s all about a pilot known as Gary, but unlike most, Gary’s just a guy who wants to impress a woman known as Quinn.
Unfortunately for Gary, he’s imprisoned on a spaceship, and all he has are an artificial intelligence platform known as Hue, and an alien creature, known as Mooncake. Now, it should be noted that Gary is not a real pilot, and that’s one of the reasons why he’s in prison.
You see, he posed as a pilot and accidentally destroyed several important governmental things. You’ll find that Gary has a knack for accidentally destroying things because he’s not the brightest, just a man in love whose life is on the line.
As for the other aspects of the story, well, it’s about Mooncake. This alien-looking blob is a destroyer of worlds because it can fire laser blasts powerful enough to destroy planets. Because of this power, the all-powerful Lord Commander is after him.
Now, we find that Final Space was quite slow from the start, and it takes some time to get used to the characters and the humor. But after a while, we slowly begin to find Gary humorous, and we love the relationship he has with Mooncake.
What’s quite funny is the constant arguments between Gary and KVN (pronounced Kevin). KVN is a robot who loves Gary as a friend, but the feeling is not mutual, and at times, it causes some funny moments.
As for the relationship with Gary and Quinn, well, it took a lot of time to develop into anything meaningful. Gary knew of Quinn but she’s mostly clueless about him; but as you might expect, things took a turn for the better as the series progressed forward.
We have to say, Final Space is not the best cartoon series on Netflix, and that’s probably because it takes a while to get going. However, at the same time, it’s not boring, and many viewers will find a lot to like here.
The ending screams for a second season, and we can only hope season one was successful enough to warrant a second because there’s so much room for improvement here.
