Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the writing and directing pair behind The LEGO Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, have landed a new five-year deal with Sony Pictures Television.
Under the Lord Miller Productions banner, the two writers known for their quirky animated films plan to develop animated as well as live-action television series in the genres of comedy and drama for Sony across multiple platforms. Along with other studios, Sony approached Lord and Miller with the deal since their current contract with 20th Century Fox is about to expire.
According to sources at Variety, the deal rounded out to nine figures. Not only does the deal give Lord and Miller the freedom to create their own projects for network, cable, or streaming, but they will also be supervising other writers’ projects. Among those projects include multiple television series featuring Sony’s Marvel characters. Some of Sony Picture's current Marvel projects include the charcaters of Venom, Spiderman, Kraven the Hunter, Nightwatch, and the Sinister Six.
In an interview with Variety, Lord and Miller expressed their delight to be working with Sony TV:
“We are so grateful to everyone at Sony Pictures Television for choosing to partner with us and expand our enduring relationship with the studio. Together we aim to make groundbreaking work of the highest quality and integrity, and to place that work in convenient proximity to your eyeballs and earholes, wherever you may be.”
Aubrey Lee, the vice president of TV development and production for Lord Miller, will stay on in her current role. Lord and Miller’s next upcoming project, Emily Spivey’s Bless the Harts, will air on FOX in the fall.
