Two of Activision Blizzard's most popular IPs could be getting television adaptations. If the LinkedIn profile of a high-ranked Activision Blizzard employee is to be trusted, then a new
Diablo anime and
Overwatch cartoon could be on the way.
According to the LinkedIn profile of Nick van Dyk, president of Activision Blizzard's film and TV division, a
Diablo TV adaptation is in pre-production for distribution worldwide through Netflix. His profile claims this will be
"rendered in anime style." His profile also mentions that he and his creative parner "
developed and sold an animated series based on Blizzard's Overwatch franchise."
Activision Blizzard has not commented on the reports stemming from van Dyk's profile; however, we have heard rumors of a
Diablo series in the past. Back in 2018, comic book publishing company Boom! Studios founder Andrew "Andy" Cosby tweeted about being in "final talks" to helm a show for Activision Blizzard and Netflix.
Again, Activision Blizzard has not announced anything officially, but it would seemingly be a smart step for the company. Video game adaptations are all the rage right now. While movies based on video games have struggled to win over fans in the past, the last few adaptations —
Castlevania,
Detective Pikachu, and
Sonic the Hedgehog, to name a few — have been well-received both on streaming services and at the box office.
Sonic the Hedgehog just enjoyed the biggest domestic opening ever for a movie based on a video game.
Castlevania is gearing up to launch its third season on Netflix.
