Adi Shankar, the executive producer of Netflix's wildly popular
Castlevania adaptation, has confirmed he has acquired the rights to adapt Capcom's
Devil May Cry video game series.
Speaking to IGN's Jacki Jing, Shankar's
Devil May Cry adaptation will also be an animated series and
"will join Castlevania in what we're now calling the bootleg multiverse."
Shankar's
Castlevania series, which is featured on Netflix, is considered one of the better video game adaptations and has received rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Though inspired by the video game series, Shankar has taken some creative liberties with the source material. It's assumed his
Devil May Cry series will do the same, though he didn't offer specifics. Shankar did specifically celebrate the fact that he
"acquired these (Devil May Cry) rights myself so the jabronis in Hollywood don’t f*** this one up too."
Season two of
Castlevania premiered on Netflix in October and was
immediately renewed for a third season. Shankar attributed the
Devil May Cry series announcement to the success of
Castlevania. Netflix hasn't revealed specific numbers for the show, but Shankar said it has "really over-performed."
"It did crazy well. We immediately got greenlit for Season 3," he said, adding:
"I wouldn't have a job if it wasn't for the fans."
Shankar hasn't said where his
Devil May Cry series will land, but given the success of
Castlevania, I wouldn't be surprised if Netflix gobbles it up.
