In an interview with Variety about superhero films and TV shows that subvert audience expectations, one particular tidbit is catching the attention of many DC Comics fans. Harley Quinn showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker were interviewed about their adult animated series and it seems the move from the defunct DC Universe to HBO Max might see the show double down on some of its more raunchy aspects.
Halpern provided the tidbit in question when he sought to explain how there show differs from even some of the more unique superhero shows out there like Umbrella Academy and WandaVision- due to the fact that there show focuses on villains and not heroes.
"A perfect example of that is in this third season of ‘Harley’ [when] we had a moment where Batman was going down on Catwoman. And DC was like, ‘You can’t do that. You absolutely cannot do that.’ They’re like, ‘Heroes don’t do that.’ So, we said, ‘Are you saying heroes are just selfish lovers?’ They were like, ‘No, it’s that we sell consumer toys for heroes. It’s hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone.’”
Naturally, that reveal has perked up quite a few ears as it's never explicitly stated that the scene was actually removed.
While unconfirmed, season 3 is expected to be released in late-2021. The show will focus more on Poison Ivy's backstory this season as her relationship with Harley takes center stage.
