Artist Reimagines Popular Cartoons With Black Lead Characters

There aren't a lot of cartoons out there with majority black characters, and that is why Tyron Handy decided to make some changes to some of the popular toons out there.

Ever wondered what some of the most popular cartoons in the past and today would look like if many of the main characters were black? Well, this artist made some changes to show us what we’re missing out on.

The artist in question is called Tyron Handy, and he’s an illustrator and comic artist based in Philadelphia. He said he didn’t have a lot of cartoons that represented him when he was growing up, so he reimagined several of his favorite toons with black characters.

The Rugrats are black

One of our favorites is how he made changes to the Rugrats, and they look great in this reimagined form. Now, we’re not saying creators should reboot the Rugrats with an all-black cast, but a similar show could do wonders.

The Simpsons are black

Mr. Handy’s creation where The Simpsons are concerned is spot on. Marge with that afro hair and black is a sight for sore eyes.

The Simpsons is the longest running cartoon series of all time, and it should probably end at this point because it’s a bore. However, if they do decide to do away with the show, the creators could come up with a black family within the same neighborhood to star in a new series.

We’d recommend getting new writers because the current crop aren’t doing a good job.

Family Guy is black

While his work on Family Guy certainly looks great, there’s a good chance it wouldn’t work. Furthermore, we should remember that Seth MacFarlane did try to create a majority black series with The Cleveland Show, and it bombed hard.

Maybe the show needed black writers, who knows. But with Seth at the helm, a black Family Guy would fail.

Overall, we like what Mr. Handy has done, and hopefully, more cartoons with black characters are created in the future.
